The release of
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been delayed until November 2026, its developers have
announced.
The video game was
due to be released in May 2026, having been postponed from its original release
window of autumn this year.
Rockstar Games
apologised to fans "for adding additional time to what we realise has been
a long wait".
Grand Theft Auto - or GTA - is one of the most popular video
game series ever created.
Rockstar Games has made
more than $8 billion (£6 billion) from sales from GTA 5, which was released in
2013, making it the most profitable video game in history.The news of the game's delay comes
a week after 31 workers were fired from Rockstar Games’ Edinburgh office, which the Independent Workers’ Union of Great
Britain (IWGB) has described as a “union-busting” move by management.
The IWGB claimed that staff were sacked for “trade union
activity", describing the dismissals as “unlawful and retaliatory”.
The union said all of the affected employees were members of
both the IWGB and a private chat group on the Discord app.
Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, said
the employees were dismissed for “gross misconduct”.
Little has been revealed about GTA 6 since the release of a teaser trailer
in December 2023.
In a statement, Rockstar Games said: "Grand Theft Auto
VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026.
"We are sorry for adding additional time to what we
realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish
the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.
"We want to thank you again for your patience and
support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for
players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day
Vice City."
